Buying Guide: Moving Home Checklist

There’s a lot to think about before moving into a new home. That’s why we’ve put together a checklist of common things that often get forgotten about.

Book a removal company

Depending on how many larger items (for example, heavy furniture) you’re taking with you to your new home, you may want to enlist the help of a professional removal company. Not only will this take some of the stress off you, but you can rest assured that your treasured possessions will be handled with care.

Notify your internet provider

Make sure you notify your internet provider ahead of time, so your service can be transferred to your new home on your moving date. That way, you won’t be left without the internet while you’re settling in.

Furniture and appliances

It might sound obvious, but if you’re moving from rented accommodation you may not own all the furniture and appliances you’ll need in your new home. You’ll soon get a feel for everything you need once you’ve moved in, but the essentials to think about ahead of time are:

• Bed and mattress
• Sofa
• Kettle and toaster
• Dining table and chairs
• Kitchen and bathroom bin

Make sure you have the essentials to hand

Chances are, you probably won’t have the energy to fully unpack as soon as you’re in your new home. That’s why it’s a good idea, when packing, to fill a couple of boxes with essentials (staple food items, cleaning supplies, plates and cutlery, towels and toiletries) and clearly label them, so you don’t have to spend ages searching through boxes on your first night.

Arrange your life insurance

If this is the first time you’ve taken out a mortgage, it’s a good idea to have a life insurance policy in place. Mortgage life insurance is designed to protect your loved ones should you die before your mortgage has been paid off, by providing a lump sum to help them clear the debt.
