Located just a short distance from the bustling market town of Chard, Somerset, the Chard Reservoir comprises 88 acres of open water and is surrounded by wildflower meadows and woodland. This diverse nature reserve is a haven for all sorts of wildlife and is guaranteed to delight birdwatchers, anglers and walkers alike.
Explore the Woodlands and Meadows
You can easily spend a relaxed day wandering around the woodlands that edge the reservoir and enjoy trying to identify the wide variety of trees that grow there, including native species such as oak, ash, beech and holly, as well as some more exotic examples, including monkey puzzle and grand firs. If you're quiet enough, you'll also be able spot pheasants, birds, butterflies, squirrels and even deer! Information panels are dotted throughout the reserve detailing fascinating information about the reserve's history, wildlife and management.
Spot a Variety of Birds & Wildlife
The calm water of the reservoir is an important source of food and shelter to several species of birds and wildfowl, including a strengthening population of grebes. This makes the bird hide, open from 8am – 3pm, another popular place to spot egrets, sandpipers, reed warblers and even the bright blue of a kingfisher. It's also home to several species of fish, including carp, bream and roach as well as tench, perch and eels. Anglers can pay for a licence to fish these teeming waters.
Natural Play Area and Walks
A new natural play space has recently been installed and allows children to burn off some energy climbing, clambering and exploring the frames while parents relax and unwind in the beautiful setting. There are many different paths to explore throughout the nature reserve, many of which are gravelled for easy access so families with pushchairs or wheelchair users can also enjoy this wonderful space. Although you can't walk around the edge of the whole reservoir, a path leads out onto Chaffcombe Lane which meets up with the Chard to Ilminster cycle path. This path then doubles back to provide a circular route where you'll return via a meadow or along the road adjacent to the car park.
